Understanding Low Mood &
Loss of Motivation
We all have times when we feel a little flat, tired or less motivated than usual. But sometimes that feeling seems to hang around and you may find yourself wondering why everything suddenly feels like so much effort.
Maybe you're putting things off even though you know they need to be done, you've lost interest in things you normally enjoy or you're simply going through the motions without feeling particularly connected to any of it. You might also notice yourself becoming more self-critical, withdrawing from people or wondering why you can't just get yourself together.
There can be many reasons we start feeling this way. Low mood and loss of motivation can be associated with depression, but stress, burnout, loneliness, grief, poor sleep, physical health, hormonal changes, relationship difficulties and challenging periods of life can all play a part too. Sometimes there isn't one obvious explanation. It may be a collection of smaller things that have gradually taken more out of you than you realised.
Understanding what's happening isn't about putting a label on every difficult feeling. It's about becoming curious about what may be contributing, recognising when you might need some extra support and finding small, realistic ways to begin feeling more connected to yourself and your life again.
Below you'll find articles and resources to help you explore low mood, motivation and some of the things that may be happening underneath it all.
